Travelling

Why I Believe Everyone Should Travel

I have always loved to travel, and whenever someone asks me for advice, especially a younger person, one of the first things I say is simple: if you have the opportunity, travel.

Not because it looks good on social media. Not because it gives you interesting stories to tell. Not even because it allows you to tick destinations off a bucket list.

Travel changes you.

It changes the way you see the world, the way you see other people, and perhaps most importantly, the way you see yourself.

Seeing New Things

There is something magical about standing somewhere completely unfamiliar.

Whether it is wandering through a bustling city, staring at an ancient castle, walking through a quiet forest, or watching the sun rise over a foreign coastline, travel reminds us that the world is far bigger than our everyday routines.

It is easy to become trapped in the familiar rhythms of life. We drive the same roads, visit the same shops, and see the same faces every day. Travel breaks that pattern and reminds us how much there is still left to discover.

New Experiences

Some of my favourite travel memories are not the famous landmarks. They are the unexpected moments.

Trying food, I had never heard of before. Though there are a few experiences I probably wouldn’t and some I wish I hadn’t.

Getting lost and finding something wonderful.

Attempting to communicate in a language I barely understood.

Learning customs and traditions that were completely different from my own.

Travel opens the door to experiences we would never encounter if we stayed within the boundaries of our normal lives.

Trying Something New

Travel encourages us to say yes.

Yes to the unfamiliar restaurant.

Yes to the local tour.

Yes to the activity that seems a little intimidating.

Yes to stepping into the unknown.

Many of the things that become our most treasured memories begin with uncertainty. Travel teaches us that we are capable of far more than we often believe.

Pushing Beyond Our Comfort Zone

Growth rarely happens when we remain comfortable.

Travel places us in situations where we must navigate uncertainty. We learn how to solve problems, adapt to unexpected changes, and trust ourselves.

Sometimes that means figuring out a train system in a foreign country. Sometimes it means travelling alone for the first time. Sometimes it means simply walking into a place where nobody knows who we are.

Each challenge builds confidence.

Every successful step becomes proof that we can handle more than we thought possible.

Learning About the World

Books can teach us many things, but there is something different about experiencing a place firsthand.

History becomes real when you stand where it happened.

Culture becomes real when you participate in it.

People become real when you sit across from them and share a meal.

Travel teaches lessons that cannot always be learned in a classroom. It broadens perspectives and reminds us that there are countless ways to live a meaningful life.

Personal Growth

Every trip leaves a mark.

Sometimes the change is small. Sometimes it is profound.

Travel teaches independence, resilience, patience, curiosity, and adaptability. It challenges assumptions and expands perspectives.

When we step outside our familiar environment, we often discover parts of ourselves that we didn't know existed.

Travel as Healing

For me, travel has often been more than adventure.

It has been healing.

There is something deeply restorative about creating distance from the stresses, expectations, and responsibilities of everyday life. New environments can offer fresh perspectives on old problems.

Travel allows space to breathe.

Space to think.

Space to reconnect with ourselves.

Sometimes healing is found in a quiet village. Sometimes it is found on a crowded city street. Sometimes it is found simply by realising that life can be bigger than the challenges we are currently facing.

And Sometimes It's Just Fun

Not every journey needs to be transformational.

Sometimes travel is simply joyful.

It is laughing with friends.

Watching sunsets.

Trying local desserts.

Taking terrible photos and wonderful photos.

Collecting memories that make you smile years later.

Fun matters. Joy matters. Experiences matter.

Life is not only about responsibilities and obligations. It is also about collecting moments that make us feel alive.

Final Thoughts

Travel has given me some of my greatest memories, my biggest lessons, and many of my most meaningful moments of growth.

It has shown me new places, introduced me to incredible people, challenged me, healed me, and reminded me how vast and beautiful the world truly is.

Every journey changes us in some way.

We leave home carrying one version of ourselves.

We return carrying another.

And that, perhaps, is the greatest gift travel has to offer.
